St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. Father Francis O'Duignan developed the idea of having St Patrick's Day cards postmarked in St Patrick, Missouri on March 17 in 1936 and designed the shamrock cachet the same year. The tradition continues today.
