Onam is one of the most respected festivals of south Indian state Kerala. It is the festival which people of Kerala have celebrated unitedly without the differences of casts and religions. The festive season of Onam falls on the Malayalam month of Chingam, between August and September every year. It is a ten-day celebration for the Malayalees all over the state, country and abroad.

Onam is the biggest events in South India and it has celebrated for ten days. It starts from the Atham, Onam festival lasts for ten days and this day is the most celebrated Thiru Onam. During Onam festival, people of Kerala celebrate many gorgeous events as games, cultural events, dances and singing songs. This festival also marks the arrival of famous King Mahabali. The Onam will celebrate in 2014 on the date of 7th September. The rangoli designs traditionally known as Pookalam are the important occasion of Onam festival.
Floral carpets greeting King Mahabali brings out the cultural front of Onam festival. Pookalam are generally the floral designs prepared of flour and different colors and paints. On this day of festival, they usually wear new dresses and visiting almost all temples which they can, they also perform lot of dances like Thiruvathira kali Thumbed Tullal etc. The main attractive feature to watch out for during the Onam festival is the famous 'Vallamkali' generally known as the great boat race.
