Flag Day Canada

National Flag of Canada Day is observed annually on 15 February, commemorating the inauguration of the Flag of Canada on that date in 1965. The day is marked by flying the flag, special public ceremonies, and educational programs in schools. It is not a public holiday, although there has been discussion about creating one.

Flag days are generally codified in national statutes, however, a decree by a head of state of the specific country can also order flag days. The display of the national flag on this day, primarily to fix it at either full or half staff.

Flag Day Canada 2014

The Canadian national flag, popularly known as the "maple leaf flag", is flown on several buildings, including private homes on National Flag of Canada Day. Some people wear pins in the form of the flag. Several schools often hold special lessons on the Canadian national flag and its history around this time of the year. February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996.

It marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and indeed, hundreds of communities across Canada. White and Red were designated as Canada's official colours in 1921 by His Majesty King George V. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for: a Dominion that is the resentment of the world.
