Ferragosto is an Italian holiday; it was related to a celebration of the middle of the summer & the end of the hard labour in the fields. In time, Roman Catholicism adopted this date since a Holy Day of Obligation to commemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary the real physical elevation of her sinless soul & incorrupt body into Heaven. The ancients celebrated the mid-summer & the end of hard labor in the fields during the month named for the emperor Augustus. They called it Feriae Augusti & they partied with good food, wine, and old-fashioned Roman fun and high-jinx! Today, all of Italy celebrates Ferragosto.
